Pinwheel Flower – Free Crochet Pattern
In this crochet video tutorial and free crochet pattern, learn how to crochet a Pinwheel Flower motif. This is a beautiful motif to quickly make and add as an embellishment to your projects. This pretty crochet pinwheel flower motif is a fun way to use up leftover yarn. Can be made in two colors, like the purple and mint flower here, or in several colors. Either way, you’ll want to make more than one in all your favorite colors.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Size: 6″ x 6″
Supplies:
Yarn: #4 worsted weight in Caron One Pound, shown in Pink, Orange, Hot Pink, White
Hook: 6.00 mm, H/10
Scissors
Stitch Markers
Tape Measure
Yarn needle
Gauge: not critical to this design, but if following a pattern be sure to check your gauge. Measurements given at end of Rounds.
Abbreviations: In US Terminology
beg – beginning
bl – back loop
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
RS – right side
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)
WS – wrong side
yo – yarn over
SPECIAL STITCHES
ssc – standing single crochet: insert hook in indicated stitch, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook (1 ssc). See video HERE.
Notes:
1. Written in US terminology
2. Right side is always facing.
3. Work in back loops where indicated.
4. Start each new color with a slip knot on hook.
5. Crochet over your ends or weave in after each Round.
Instructions:
PETAL 1
Color Pink
Ch 8, sl st to 1st ch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 25 more dc in ring, sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (26 dc). End off yarn.
Color Orange
Round 2: RS facing, ssc in BLO of any st, 1 sc in BLO in each st around, end with sl st to beg st, or with invisible join method. (26 sc). End off yarn. Place stitch marker in any stitch on RS of Petal #1. Measures 3 inches.
Petal 1
PETAL 2
NOTES:
- RS facing of previous petal.
- Add new petal to previous petal, example, add #2 to #1, add #3 to #2, etc.
- Flatten and arrange petals, with RS facing, after each petal is added.
Color Hot Pink
Ch 8, thread tail of ch-8 from front to back through center ring of previous petal, sl st to 1st ch to form a ring. Begin work towards the backside of flower.
Round 1: Repeat Round 1 above.
Color White
Round 2: Repeat Round 2 above.
Petals 1 & 2
PETALS 3 – 7
Petals 3 – 7: Repeat as for Petal 2.
Alternate the colors as follows:
Petals 3, 5, 7 : as Petal 1, Pink and Orange
Petals 4, 6, 8: as Petal 2, Hot Pink and White
Important Notes:
Keep in mind the direction to crochet in. Go towards the back on Round 1. Example of what it will do if you turn and crochet a petal towards the front or RS:
Example here is I crocheted towards the front of my flower (RS) on Petal 2. The petals do not lay correctly.
Example here is I crocheted towards the back (WS) on all the petals, and all lay correctly.
Example of completed Petals 1 through 7:
PETAL 8
NOTES:
- Thread tail of ch-8 through previous petal #7 from back to front AND then through petal #1 from back to front individually, sl st to 1st ch to form a ring.
- Gently pull ch-8 ring through each petal as you need more room to crochet into it.
Color Pink
Ch 8 (see note to thread tail above to begin)
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), TURN, 25 more dc in ring, sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-3. (26 dc). End off yarn.
Color Orange
Round 2: Repeat Round 2 above.
Shape petals into a flower, weave in any ends. Measures 6 inches.
