Messy Bun Hat – Free Crochet Pattern
The Messy Bun Hat is a cute hat that has a whole in the top to pull your hair through to make a “messy bun” or a ponytail. I think it is so clever! Made with chunky weight yarn, this works up super quick! Here we go…

Messy Bun Hat
Skill Level: Intermediate
Size: Fits up to 22″
Measurements: Laying flat, 7.5″ long, 10.5″ wide. The hole is 3″ in diameter.
Supplies:
Yarn: Loops & Threads, Charisma – Color Silver
Yarn weight: Bulky #5; 60-65 yards
Hook – 6.00 mm [US J-10] or size to obtain gauge, 5.00 mm [US H-8], 8.00mm [US L-11]
Yarn needle
Stitch Marker (1)
Gauge: 9 sts and 5 rows = 4 inches in dc (with J Hook)
Abbreviations: In US Terminology
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
Special Stitches & Placement:
Third back loop:
Row 3: Each stitch is worked into the third back loop of the hdc from the previous row. Push the “V” to the front of your work, look for the horizontal bar behind the “V”. Work your stitch in the horizontal bar.
SC Decrease:
In indicated stitch, start sc by inserting hook into stitch, draw up a loop, (2 loops on hook), go into the next st, draw up a loop, (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through all loops on hook.
Notes:
1. Start by making a rectangular piece of fabric, join fabric together starting at the crown, and add the brim last.
2. It’s a 2 Row pattern repeat.
3. Leave a long 2 yard tail at the beginning to sew seam.
4. Ch 3 at beginning of Row counts as a stitch.
5. Row 3 is worked in the third back loop of each hdc from previous row.

Instructions:
Using J hook- See notes
Row 1: Chain 15, turn, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in next 6 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 2 sts, 1 sl st in last st. (13 sts).
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, 1 hdc in each st across. (13 hdc).
Row 3: Ch 3, turn, (working this entire row in third loop of hdc) *1 dc in next 7 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 2 sts, 1 sl st in last st. (13 sts).
Row 4-26: Repeat Rows 2-3, end with completing Row 2 (13 hdc). Drop loop, do NOT cut yarn, will pick up loop for brim later.
CROWN & SEAMING:
Using H hook-
Using the long 2 yard tail, sl st around crown opening. When back at beginning, thread yarn needle with same tail, sew from crown to brim, picking up the third back loop of hdc row and the chain st of 1st row. When at brim, end off, weave in end.
BRIM:
Pick up loop from end of Row 26.
Round 1: ch 1, 1 sc around evenly placing 44 total sc around brim. (44 sc).
Round 2: place stitch marker at first sc of Round 1. Do not join rounds. 1 sc in each st around, making a sc decrease in every 9th st. (40 sc).
Round 3: 1 sc in each st around, making 1 sc decrease in 4th st, *1 sc in next 8 sts, 1 sc decrease in next st*, repeat around *-*. (36 sc).
*Optional: do another round of 1 sc in each st if you need more length to the brim at this point.
Using L hook-
Round 4: 1 loose sl st in each st around. (36 sl sts).
End off yarn, weave in ends.
