How To Crochet The Alpine Stitch

Learn how to make the beautiful Alpine Stitch in this crochet video tutorial. I’ll provide an easy, stitch by stitch tutorial along with my tips for stitch substitutions.
The stitch multiple in this video is 3 + 1, starting with a row of single crochet. It can also be started with a row of double crochet if you prefer, but the multiple will be different. Refer to your pattern for beginning chain multiple.

Chain

Front Post Double Crochet
Patterns that use the Alpine Stitch:
Alpine Stitch Wash Cloth – Free Crochet Pattern
Alpine Peaks Square – Free Crochet Pattern
This stitch combination makes a very beautiful and textured fabric. The front or right side has all the raised texture, and the back is flat, yet pretty too (see video for view of back).
Tips:
- The amount of beginning chains may differ than shown in the video, refer to the individual pattern for the stitch count that you need to begin with.
- All the double crochet and front post double crochet are on the right side of your work.
- Pattern is a 4 row repeat.
- Practice your tension for a few rows before you begin your project.
- Even rows are worked in the previous row and in two rows below.
- If you are a tight crocheter, you could substitute a front post treble crochet instead of a front post double crochet. This will bring your stitch up higher, and not pull down.
- The front post stitches are worked around the double crochet stitch, not around the single crochet stitch.
You will need the following supplies:
Any yarn and corresponding crochet hook.
