Herringbone Super Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern
The Herringbone Super Scarf, free crochet pattern, is made using the herringbone half double crochet stitch. This is an easy pattern one row repeat to memorize. Scroll down for the written instructions and a video tutorial on this pretty stitch.

These stitches create a textured and detailed fabric.
I used Red Heart Fashion Soft yarn for this pattern, it’s a medium #3 weight yarn and sizes 5.00 mm US/H and 5.50 mm US/I hooks.

Herringbone Super Scarf
Skill Level: Intermediate
Size: 9” Wide x 72” Long
Supplies:
Yarn: (2) skeins of Red Heart Fashion Soft, Color Chocolate 675 yds/250g
#3 light, 100% acrylic, 141 g/5 oz, 348 meters/381 yards each skein
Hook: H/8 – 5.00 mm, I/9 – 5.5 mm
Yarn needle
Gauge: 13 rows X 16 hhdc sts = 4 inches
Abbreviations: In US Terminology
beg – beginning
ch – chain
hhdc – herringbone half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)
yo – yarn over
Special Stitches:
hhdc: Herringbone half double crochet – Yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw through st AND first loop on hook, yo, draw through both loops on hook. See Video Tutorial HERE.
Waistcoat Stitch: insert hook between the “v” of the previous row sc, yo, pull up a loop, yo pull through both loops on hook. (1 st made). See Video Tutorial HERE.
Notes:
- Written In US terminology.
- First work in rows to make the body, later work in the round for the edging.
- Stitch counts are in brackets ( ) at the end of Rows.
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- To increase width add more to beg chains, to increase length add more rows.
- Stitch multiple = any number + 1 chain.
Instructions
BODY
Ch 32 with H Hook
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook (counts as 1 sc), sc in each ch across. (31 sc).
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as st), turn, 1 hhdc in each st across. (31 hhdc).
Rows 3 – 235: Repeat Row 2. Do not end off, continue to Edging.
EDGING
Note: Work edging loosely.
Round 1: Ch 1, turn, *sc in each st across, 3 sc in corner, sc evenly across row ends, 3 sc in next corner*, repeat *-* around, end with sl st to beg sc.
Waistcoat stitch – crochet loosely, with I hook
Rounds 2-4: Ch 1, *waistcoat st in each st across, 3 sc in corner*, repeat *-* around, end with sl st to beg st. End off, weave in ends. Block when complete.
