Elegant Broomstick Lace Washcloth – Free Crochet Pattern
The Elegant Washcloth is a vintage inspired cloth that combines basic crochet stitches and edged in broomstick lace on one side. If you’re new to this stitch, this would be a great starting project to try it out.

I love the look of broomstick lace, and I love to make it. It works up really fast with the big loops and looks more difficult than it is.
The yarn in this is Sugar’n Cream in the color Ecru and Dark Orchid. This would look great in any yarn, variegated or striped too.
Elegant Broomstick Lace Washcloth
Skill Level: Intermediate
Measurements: 8 inches x 8 inches
Supplies:
Yarn: Sugar’n Cream #4 medium, 100% cotton, 71 g/ 2.5 oz, 109 meters/120 yards; Color: Ecru, or Dark Orchid (1 skein, 60 yds)
Hook: H/8 – 5.00 mm
Needle: 50 – 25.00 mm
Yarn needle
Gauge: 17 rows X 15 sc sts = 4 inches
Abbreviations: In US Terminology
BLO – back loop only
BSL – broomstick lace
beg – beginning
ch – chain
RS – right side
sc – single crochet
sp – space
st(s) – stitch(es)
yo – yarn over
Notes:
1. Worked in Rows.
2. Made widthwise, to increase width, add more beg chains, stitch multiple 5+1.
3. Stitch counts are in brackets ( ) at the end of each Row.
4. Ch 1 at beg of Row does not count as a stitch.
Instructions – in US terms
Ch 31
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across. (30 sc).
Note: First and last stitches only are worked through both loops of stitch.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, *1 sc in BLO in next st*, repeat *-* across to last st, sc in last st. (30 sc).
Rows 3-27: Repeat Row 2. Do not end off, continue to BSL Edge. Drop live loop off hook.
BROOMSTICK LACE EDGE
Notes:
- Cluster means 5 loops with 7 sc = 1 cluster.
- When all loops are on needle, count them to make sure you have 30 loops.
Row 28: Place live loop on needle, skip 1st st, *pick up 1 loop in next st, place onto needle, repeat from * across. (30 loops on needle).
Row 29: Slide 5 loops off needle onto hook, ch 1 in center sp of loops, 7 sc in center sp of loops, *slide next 5 loops off needle onto hook, 7 sc in center sp of loops, repeat from * across. (42 sc, 6 clusters). End off yarn, weave in ends.
