DIY Video Tutorial: How To Wind Yarn Into A Ball
In this DIY video tutorial, you will learn how to wind a hank of yarn into a center pull ball. This is a great technique to use if you don’t have a yarn winder, or if you’re away from home and need to wind a hank of yarn on the fly. There are several options on how to do this, I’ll show how I like to do it, and suggest several other ways as well. Scroll down for my tips and video tutorial.

There are several ways you can wind a hank of yarn into a ball or cake. There are several tools you can use to do this as well. But if you’re away from home on vacation and “need” to wind it up asap so you can start stitching with it, this is for you. Or if you don’t have a yarn winder, like me, but want to work with a hank of yarn, this will work.
You may want to invest in a yarn winder if you find yourself winding up lots of hanks all the time. Your arms can get heavy after a while doing it this way, but it’s a good way to get a little exercise, and the result is a beautiful cake of yarn, win-win!
You will need the following supplies:
One hank of yarn, with yarn label.

Tips:
- Have patience when winding up a hank, some tangling is inevitable, just take your time with it.
- Allow enough time to completely wind the whole hank of yarn at one sitting.
- Keep hold of the beginning tail in your hand at all times.
- Fix any knots or imperfections you find in the yarn while winding it.
- If you don’t have a yarn winder (like me), this allows you to wind up any yarn hanks that you may have on hand.
Other Suggestions:
- Place yarn around the back of a chair.
- Have someone else hold the yarn for you with their hands spread apart.
- Use the inside cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels or toilet paper to wrap the yarn around, instead of your thumb.
- Place yarn on the floor or table, and put a heavy object on either end to hold the yarn apart.
