This stitch is made by alternating the Tunisian Simple Stitch and the Tunisian Purl Stitch. This tutorial is made in rows, working back and forth. It’s a two row repeat and is very fun to make.
The back looks like knitting, but the front doesn’t look like knitting or crochet to me. It’s very unique and a beautiful stitch design. I have a free scarf pattern that is great to practice this stitch, see below for the Ombre Scarf. It’s made with Red Heart Ombre yarn and only takes one skein.
Tips:
- You need to be able to identify the stitches so you’ll know what stitch to place in it. If you put it away for a while, you’ll know what stitch to start your next row with once you pick it back up again.
- Do a quick stitch count once you pick up all the stitches on the forward pass, to avoid skipping a stitch.
- It’s easy to skip a Tunisian Simple Stitch on the forward pass, and if you’re not paying attention, it won’t show up until the next row. Then you’ll have to frog back to the skipped stitch.
- Use a larger Tunisian crochet hook for more drape and less curling on the ends.
- Once completed, all four edges will have a nice chain edge. No need for an additional border unless you want to make one.
