Cross stitch is a form of embroidery and has been one of my favorite crafts since I was a young girl. I’ve made ornaments, wall hangings and pillow cases over the years. I’ve also made Christmas stockings for my kids when they were babies that are quite intricate and took a few years to complete. These types of needle work are heirlooms and will be treasured for years to come. So to begin, I have a cross stitch basic instructions tutorial below for those that are new to it or need a refresher.
Instructions:
First you must make your crochet fabric. I’ve found that single crochet, in the back loop only, works best for me. This will align your stitches directly on top of each other to line up your cross stitches. Turn your work to the wrong side, and this will become the right side to add your cross stitching too.
Each single crochet stitch equals one square on your chart. You will use all four corners of the single crochet stitch to make your cross stitch.
Cut your yarn or thread approximately 1 yard long. If you make it too long, it gets twisted and tangles up easily as you work.
Mark your crochet fabric with stitch markers to the dimensions of the chart. Following the chart, add the cross stitches as specified.
I try to weave in the ends as I go as they tend to get pulled into your working yarn. (Just a personal choice, you don’t have to).
How To Make A Cross Stitch
Working A Cross Stitch:
A cross stitch can be completed individually, or worked as a line of half stitches and then completed on the return.
One rule I like to follow is that all the stitches face the same way.
Complete one cross stitch:
Complete half stitches in a row:
