The slight variation in how you yarn over can make a huge impact on your final fabric, here are some differences in a single crochet stitch.
Yarn Over vs Yarn Under
Single Crochet Differences:
Yarn Over: bring yarn from back to front, wrapping it around your hook.
- Fabric will be larger.
- Stitches will not twist.
- Gauge will be bigger.
- Uses more yarn.
- Abbreviated in US terms: yo (yarn over).
- Abbreviated in UK terms: yoh (yarn over hook).
Yarn Under: bring yarn from front to back, or under the hook.
- Fabric will be smaller.
- The base of the stitch will twist.
- Gauge will be smaller.
- Uses less yarn.
- Craft Yarn Council didn’t have an abbreviation for yarn under, but I’m guessing it would be: yu (yarn under) in US, and yuh (yarn under hook) in UK.
Tips:
Some people have learned to crochet using a combination of a yarn over and a yarn under to complete the stitch. This video demonstrates a yarn under for both steps.
If you’re making a yarn under, it doesn’t make it “wrong”, just be consistent. Some designs are written with a yarn under such as in amigurumi designs for example.
If your gauge is a lot smaller using the same weight yarn and hook as your pattern, this may be the issue, especially if it happens all the time.
You will need the following supplies:
Any size yarn or thread you like, with corresponding hook size. Shown in this video are:
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver Worsted Weight #4 weight
Crochet Hook: size J/6.00 mm
