The Granny Square Shawl is a classic crochet heirloom made using beautiful colors for a stunning shawl. Enjoy this easy and basic method of making the squares using chains, double crochet, and slip stitches, then connect them together in a join as you go method. This is also a favorite way to use up leftover yarn from other projects and make something beautiful. Scroll down for the pattern and video tutorials to guide you through!

The granny square is probably one of the first things a new crocheter learns to make. There are so many ways to make them but in this video I’ll demonstrate a very basic way that I like to use.
Watch the video Here:
Tips:
- Right side is always facing.
- I recommend to weave in your ends after each Round, or at the end of making each square, then weave them all in at once.
- Great way to use up your scrap or stash yarn, but you could buy certain colors and plan your squares out.
- Each additional Round will increase your stitch count by 12 double crochet stitches, or by 1 additional space on each side of the square.

Assembly
Add your final Round 5 at the same time that you join-as-you-go, to connect them together.
Arrange your squares in the order you want to assemble them together, then follow this chart to connect them together in numerical order.
Join squares in numeric order, follow chart for squares 1-36. There are 12 rows with 3 squares in each row. The first row is all one sided joins. Rows 2-12: first square of the row is a one sided join, then the next two squares are two sided joins.
