Granny Square Blanket – Free Crochet Pattern
The Granny Square Blanket is a classic crochet heirloom made using scrap yarn. Enjoy this beginner and basic method of making the squares using chains, double crochet, and slip stitches, then connect them together in a join as you go method. This is also a favorite by many crocheters as it’s a great way to use up leftover yarn from other projects. Scroll down for the pattern and video tutorials to guide you through!

The granny square is probably one of the first things a new crocheter learns to make. There are so many ways to make them but in this video I’ll demonstrate a very basic way that I like to use.

Tips:
- Right side is always facing.
- I recommend to weave in your ends after each Round, or at the end of making each square, then weave them all in at once.
- Great way to use up your scrap or stash yarn, but you could buy certain colors and plan your squares out.
- Each additional Round will increase your stitch count by 12 double crochet stitches, or by 1 additional space on each side of the square.

Note: work all dc stitches into the center of the ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc throughout), 2 dc, *ch 2, 3 dc*, repeat *-* around 3 times, end with ch 2, join with sl st to top of ch 3.
(12 dc, 4 corner ch-2 sps). End off yarn.
Note: Begin Rounds 2 – 5 in any ch-2 corner space.
Color B – with slip knot on hook
Round 2: Sl st to any ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp* repeat *-* around 3 times, 3 dc in beg ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (24 dc, 4 corner ch-2 sps). End off yarn.

Color C – with slip knot on hook
Round 3: Sl st to any ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, *3 dc in next sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp* repeat *-* around 3 times, 3 dc in beg ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (36 dc, 4 corner ch-2 sps). End off yarn.

Complete 50 squares = 49 squares through Round 4, and 1 square through Round 5.
Assembly
I made two squares of each color combination, then I laid them out on the floor and arranged them how I liked them. Add your final Round 5 at the same time that you join-as-you-go, to connect them together.
Arrange your squares in the order you want to assemble them together, then follow this chart to connect them together in numerical order.

Make only 1 square with Round 5 all the way around.
Color E – with slip knot on hook
Round 5: Sl st to any ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, *[3 dc in next sp] 3 times, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp* repeat *-* around 3 times, 3 dc in beg ch-2 sp, ch 3, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3. (60 dc, 4 corner ch-3 sps). Weave in ends. This becomes Square #1, or the adjacent square for your first join.

Notes: Place WS facing of adjacent square, RS facing of current square. Work in current square unless specified to work in adjacent square. Begin in ch-2 space of any corner on current square.

Round 5: Sl st to any ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 1, join with sl st to 2nd ch of adjacent square corner, ch 1, 3 dc in same corner sp, *[skip 3 sts on adjacent square, sl st in next sp of adjacent square, skip 3 sts, 3 dc in next sp] 3x, skip 3 sts, 3 dc in corner sp, ch 1, join with sl st to 2nd ch of adjacent square corner, ch 1, 3 dc in same corner sp*, repeat *-* 1 more time, **[skip 3 sts, 3 dc in next st] 3x, skip 3 sts, (3 dc in ch-2 corner sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same corner sp), repeat from ** 1 more time, end with skip 3 sts, sl st to beg dc. (60 dc, 4 ch-3 loops).
My final result with all of them connected together, as shown in the below photo.
Border
Make your final three Rounds working around the entire perimeter of the blanket, with RS facing throughout.
Color E – with slip knot on hook, begin in one of the four corner spaces.
Round 1: *(3 dc in corner sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same corner sp), [3 dc in each sp across edge to next corner]*, repeat *-* around all 4 sides, end with sl st to beg dc.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, *(ch 3, sc in corner sp, ch 3, sc in same corner sp), [ch 3, sc in next sp across edge to next corner]*, repeat *-* around all 4 sides, end with sl st to beg sc.
Note: Use seven colors held together for the border, but you could use more or less if you desire. Begin with a slip stitch on your hook, in any corner space. Make one row all the way around the blanket.
Change to size 10.00 mm, N/P hook.
Round 3: *(1 sc in corner sp, ch 2, 1 sc in same corner sp), [ch 1, 1 sc in next ch-3 sp across edge to next corner]*, repeat *-* around, end with ch 1, sl st to beg sc. End off yarns, weave in ends.
