Throw Back Thursday #2
Crocheted Wooden Hangers
Back in the early 1980’s, I received a pattern from a very special lady for wooden hangers. These days, I imagine it would probably be called a “hanger cozy”, and it is difficult to find these types of hangers in the stores now. The wooden hanger is encased in the crochet and then beads are sewn on afterwards. This pattern was typed on a typewriter, remember those? The paper is now yellowed and a little bit flimsy. I wrote on it in pen because the number of stitches I used was slightly different from the original pattern. I also drew a little chart on it too. Now I wish I hadn’t done that, but oh well, too late now.
These were made with worsted weight yarn and then the beads were sewn on at the end. I used them for heavy jackets and I especially liked them for sweaters because they didn’t fall off the hanger. The only problem is they are quite wide and take up a lot of room in your closet. I don’t know about you, but closet space is very precious, I need every inch in mine. I use them now for my boutiques if I’m outside and have a canopy; I place them around the outside perimeter of the tent to display garments.
Here are some photos of them, and the original pattern. I do not know the source; I didn’t see one resembling this in Ravelry. I’m not to credit for this pattern, just putting it out there for you if you want to make some for yourself and going down memory lane today. Hope you enjoy your day.
Happy throw back Thursday!

Hi Carolyn 🙂 Those are lovely hanger covers! Very pretty! I have to admit I have never seen ones like those before. Very pretty design and very lovely to have the vintage hangers for displaying your items.
Hi Rhondda! I made a lot of them back then and I’m happy I still have some around the house. I don’t know the pattern source, she didn’t type it on the paper. I know you like vintage crochet, if you see it, let me know. Thanks for stopping by!
Very beautiful! You did a great job and how perfect to show off for your outdoor events!
Thank you Kathy! 🙂
These look great, maybe I should try them out. Thank you for sharing 🙂
Thank you Hege! I hope you do try them, they are really great. If you do, please post a pic on my facebook page, I would love to see. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
I made these as a girl for hangers. I wanted to do some again about 35 years ago but my mother could not find her old pattern. I am so happy. Thanks.
Oh Carolyn! Thank you so much for this pattern. My mother-in-law used to make these for us, and I would love to make some for my D-I-Ls. I didn’t think there was a chance that I would find the pattern, and then I happened upon your site. So thank you, thank you, thank you!! (One more thing … My M-I-L wrapped the wooden hanger first by just winding yarn around it before all the crocheting was completed. It makes a really nice padded hanger.) I can’t wait to begin this project.
You’re welcome Patricia! I’m glad you found my site and a pattern you like! That is a great idea to wrap the yarn around the wooden hanger for extra padding, I’ll try it next time I make one too. Happy crocheting! 🙂
