Herringbone Infinity Scarf A Free Crochet Pattern
The Herringbone Infinity Scarf is a free crochet pattern in one of my favorite stitches. I love the look of the color blocking and this stitch adds so much texture to the scarf. It works up quickly and is one of those patterns that you can make on autopilot.

It’s a versatile pattern and easy to adjust the size and gauge. This is a very attractive scarf and looks great in a solid or variegated yarn.

Herringbone Infinity Scarf
Supplies:
Yarn: Charisma in Charcoal & Dark Purple
Yarn weight: Bulky #5, 109 yards each color, 218 yards total
Hook: US K / 6.50 MM
Yarn needle
Gauge: 3 Hhdc stitches & 4 Rows = 2 Inches
Abbreviations: ch – chain; sl st – slip stitch; fdsc – foundation single crochet; sc – single crochet
Special Stitch: See Video Tutorial.
Hhdc – herringbone half double crochet- yo, insert hook, yo and draw through st and first loop on hook, yo, draw through both loops on hook.
Skill: Intermediate
Notes: This infinity scarf is worked in the back loops only when making the herringbone stitch, placing the Hhdc stitch in the chain 1 space from the previous row. It gives one side a textured look and the other side a smoother finish. Do not turn your work, always keeping the right side facing you. This stitch count will use up most of your skeins, if you make it longer or wider, you will need 2 skeins of each color.
Instructions: Begin with Charcoal color-
Row 1: Fdsc 126 sc stitches, sl st to beginning stitch, careful not to twist your work, to form the circle. (126 sc).
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 Hhdc and ch 1 throughout); skip 1 st, 1 Hhdc in next st in back loop only, *ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 Hhdc in next st (in back loop only)*; repeat * * around; ch 1, sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch 3. (63 Hhdc).
Row 3: Ch 3, *1 Hhdc in back loop of ch 1 space, ch 1*; Repeat * * around. Sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch 3. (63 Hhdc).
Rows 4-7: Repeat Row 3. End off yarn, weave in end.
Join Dark Purple color by sl st to any ch 1 space.
Rows 8-14: Repeat Row 3. (63 Hhdc).
Row 15: Ch 1, 1 sc in back loop of each stitch around, sl st to beginning st. (126 sc). End off yarn, weave in end.
Embellish: Optional
Add a crochet flower, brooch or a bow to make it your own.

You’re welcome Christie!
Hello! This looks beautiful! I have a quick question though..if I am working with just worsted weight should I go up a hook size? To which hook? Or work it with k hook and double strand it? Thank you for your beautiful pattern and your time!
I would recommend using two strands of WW yarn and the K hook to get the bulky weight. Thank you Samantha!
Love this scarf ,thank for the pattern
You’re welcome Isabel! 🙂

Hi Kathy, it will work with using two yarns of worsted weight together, a few people have linked up on Ravelry and they look great if you want to see how theirs turned out. Have fun. Thank you so much! 🙂
Thanks so much for the free pattern! Thanks, too, for my new reason to run to Michael’s in the morn’…..I see sooo many color combo possibilities w/this!
You’re welcome Yvette 🙂
A nice addition to my scarf pattern collection. Thanks for sharing it!
You’re welcome Peggy! 🙂
were can I find the yarn
Hi Lise, Loops & Threads yarn is from Michael’s. You can use any bulky weight yarn or use worsted weight with 2 strands held together at the same time to get the thickness. 🙂
I’m going to AC Moore today and buy the yarn. My cousin has put in her order for a crimson and cream one.
Hi Thadd, oh that will be a pretty color combination! 🙂
I just love it! I want to make it with a hook size 5 mm. How long is your scarf and should there be a multiple of some stitches?
Hi Zita, it is a 2 stitch pattern repeat of 1 HBhdc and 1 chain stitch, and mine measures approximately 50″ around. Hope this helps!
Does fdsc mean foundation single crochet?
Hi Laura, thanks for asking, yes it does. Look under Abbreviations, I have all the stitches listed there that are used in the pattern 🙂
Lol oh my goodness…I looked four times and didn’t see that. Thanks for getting back to me, 🙂
No worries, happens to all of us – you’re welcome!
Hi Carolyn,
In row three am I only putting the hbhdc in the chain one spaces? Thank you and love the pattern 🙂
Hi Kristen, Thank you so much. Yes, 1 HBhdc in the back loop of the chain 1 space from the previous row.
My daughter is asking for infinity scarves for Christmas, going to venture and try this out, I thinks it’s stunning.
It will be a wonderful gift. Thank you so much Sandi! 🙂
I plan on making these for Christmas presents next year in a variety of colors!! Thanks! By the way my name is Carolyn I love the color purple and my mother taught me to crochet one year ago and I have been crocheting ever since.
That is great Carolyn! Thanks for your lovely comment 🙂
This is beautiful can’t wait to give it a try. Thanks so much for sharing
I’ve read the instructions over and over but I don’t see how many you are to chain on? Thanks!
This is started with 126 Foundation single crochets, but you can start with 126 chains and then a row of single crochet instead. You can also check out the Ravelry project page, there are a lot of comments on how many chains or fsc they started with to make different sizes. Hope this helps. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/herringbone-infinity-scarf-3/people
