Center Circle Square – Free Crochet Pattern
The Center Circle Square is an easy pattern with some intermediate stitches to give it that wow factor. One side has all the texture and the other side is flat, a completely different look. The color possibilities, and effects, are endless in this design..

I used Red Heart Super Saver for this square in bright, vibrant colors of yellow, pink, orange and red. I outlined the circle in white to form the square.
It doesn’t take long to make this square, believe it or not. Using double crochet stitches it builds rather quickly. I love how the post stitches make the ridges on one side.

Skill Level: Easy – with knowledge of post stitches
Measurements: 12 inches wide by 12 inches tall.
Supplies:
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver #4 (5 colors, 110 total yards)
Color A – Lemon E300_235 (5 ½ yards)
Color B – Perfect Pink E300_706 (12 yards)
Color C – Pumpkin E300_254 (31 yards)
Color D – Hot Red E300_390 (26 yards)
Color E – Soft White E300_316 (35 ½ yards)
Hook: 6.00 mm [US J]
Stitch Markers – quantity (4)
Yarn needle
Gauge: measurements given at end of each round.
Abbreviations:
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- sc – single crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- sp(s) – space(s)
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- tr – treble crochet
- RS – Right Side
- WS – Wrong Side
Special Stitches & Placement:
alt dc – alternate double crochet: pull up loop approximately 1 inch, yo hook with loop just pulled up, hold loop securely with finger on hook, insert hook in next st, yo, pull through st, [yo, pull through both loops on hook] 2x.
blo – third back loop: Insert hook in horizontal bar behind the V of the stitch.
fpdc – front post double crochet: yo, insert hook from front to back, around stitch, and to front, [yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] 2x.
sfpdc – standing front post double crochet: yo, insert hook from front to back, around stitch, and to front, [yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] 2x.
shdc – standing half double crochet: with slip knot on hook, yo, insert into designated stitch, yo, pull through, 3 loops on hook, yo, pull through all loops.
ssc – standing single crochet: with slip knot on hook, insert into designated stitch, yo, pull through, 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through all loops.
str – standing treble: with slip knot on hook, yo 2x, insert hook into designated stitch, yo, pull through, [yo, pull through 2 loops on hook] 3x.
Notes:
1. Written in US terminology.
2. Ch 3 and Ch 4 count as a stitch- optional: use alt dc to begin rounds.
3. Begin new color with a slip knot on your hook.
4. Stitch Count: given at end of Rounds written as (#of stitches) = total # of sts for round.
5. Pattern Repeat: given at end of Rounds written as [corner sts] other sts = total # of sts on each side for Rounds 9-12.
Instructions:
Color A (Yellow)
Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and 1 ch), 11 dc in 4th ch from hook, join with sl st to top of ch 4.

Round 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st, *2 dc in next st*, repeat *-* around, join with sl st to top ch of ch 3. End off Color A. Measures 3 inches.

Color B (Pink)
Round 3: Turn, (WS facing) – 1 sfpdc around any st, *2 fpdc around next st 1 fpdc around next st *, repeat *-* around, 2 fpdc around last st, join with sl st top of first st. Measures 3 ½ inches.

Pattern Repeat: 2 fpdc , 1 fpdc in next st
Round 4: Turn, (RS facing) – alt dc or ch 3, 1 dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 2 sts*, repeat *-* around, 2 dc in last st, sl st to top of first st. End off Color B. Measures 5 inches.

Color C (Orange)
Round 5:Turn, (WS facing) – 1 sfpdc around any st, 1 fpdc around next 2 sts, *2 fpdc around next st, 1 fpdc around next 3 sts *, repeat *-* around, 2 fpdc around last st, join with sl st top of first st. Measures 6 inches.

Pattern Repeat: 2 fpdc, 1 fpdc in next 3 sts
Round 6:Turn, (RS facing) – alt dc or ch 3, 1 dc in next 3 sts, *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next 4 sts*, repeat *-* around, 2 dc in last st, sl st to top of first st. End off Color C. Measures 7 inches.

Pattern Repeat: 2 dc, 1 dc in next 4 sts
Color D (Red)
Round 7: Turn, (WS facing), – 1 sfpdc around any st, 1 fpdc around next 4 sts, *2 fpdc around next st, 1 fpdc around next 5 sts *, repeat *-* around, 2 fpdc around last st, join with sl st top of first st. Measures 8 inches.
(84 fpdc).
Pattern Repeat: 2 fpdc, 1 fpdc in next 5 sts
Round 8: Turn, (RS facing), – alt dc or ch 3, 1 dc in each st around, end with sl st to top of first st. End off Color D. Measures 9 1/2 inches.
(84 dc).
Pattern Repeat: 1 dc in each st
Notes-
- Round 9 forms it into a square by adding 4 corners.
- Repeat instructions inside brackets [ ] 3 times, then repeat *-** 1 time.
Color E (Soft White)
Begin round by marking the corners, use stitch markers, place 1 in any stitch, *count 21 sts and place another stitch marker* , Repeat *-* around until you have 4 stitch markers with 20 sts between each one = 84 sts around.
Round 9: (RS facing throughout) – 1 str in any st with stitch marker, 1 tr in same st, ch 2, 2 tr in same st, *[1 tr in next 4 sts, 1 dc in next 3 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 2 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 3 sts, 1 tr in next 4 sts**, 2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr in next st] 3 times, end with repeat *-* 1 time, join with sl st to top of beginning st. Measures 10 inches.
(8 sc, 16 hdc, 24 dc, 48 tr, 4 ch-2 sps) = 96 sts.
Pattern Repeat: [2tr-ch2-2tr] 4 tr, 3 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 3 dc, 4 tr= 24 sts each side.
Round 10: sl st in next 2 sts to corner, ch 3 (counts as 1 hdc, ch 1), 1 hdc in same sp, *[1 hdc in next 24 sts**, 1 hdc, ch 2, 1 hdc in next corner sp] 3 times, end with repeat *-** 1 time, join with sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch-3. End off Color E. Measures 11 inches.
(104 hdc, 4 ch-2 sps) = 104 sts.
Pattern Repeat: [1hdc-ch2-1hdc] 24 hdc = 26 sts each side.
Color C (Orange)
Note- Work in Third Back Loop (blo)
Round 11: 1 shdc in any corner, ch 2, 1 hdc in same sp, *[in blo 1 hdc in next 26 sts**, 1 hdc, ch 2, 1 hdc in next corner sp] 3 times, end with repeat *-** 1 time, join with sl st to top of beginning st. End off Color C. Measures 11 ½ inches.
(112 hdc, 4 ch-2 sps) = 112 sts.
Pattern Repeat: [1hc-ch2-1hdc] 26 hdc = 28 sts each side.
Color E (Soft White)
Note- Work in Third Back Loop (blo)
Round 12: 1 ssc in any corner, 2 sc in same sp, *[in blo 1 sc in next 28 sts**, 3 sc in next corner sp] 3 times, repeat *-** 1 time, join with sl st to top of beginning st. End off Color E. Measures 12 inches.
(124 sc) = 124 sts.
Pattern Repeat: [3sc] 28 sc= 31 sts each side.
